Smart component design and manufacturing development will drive the uptake of recycled carbon fibre materials in aerospace.
High volume adoption of carbon fibre composites started in the aerospace industry in the '70s and '80s and it remains one of the largest consumers of virgin carbon fibre. Whilst recycled carbon fibres are not yet used in aerospace, the CARBISO™ range of products offer the opportunity to successfully close the loop with cost effective lightweighting solutions for both aerospace tooling and other parts such as seating, overhead stowage, fairings and closures.
Injection moulded parts could be lightened by switching from glass fibre fillers to recycled carbon fibres in milled or chopped form.
With the correct design, the CARBISO™ M and CARBISO™ TM range of 100% and hybrid nonwoven mats could also be used in place of virgin carbon fibre reinforcements, or to lighten glassfibre components, in a wide range of closed mould processes such as SMC or prepreg manufacturing.
